What is an HOA member?

An HOA member is simply the owner of a property, a house, townhouse, or condo unit, in a community governed by an association, and membership comes automatically with ownership rather than by choice. Some members go on to serve on the board itself, in a standard officer role or as a Member at Large, a flexible position that fills in wherever the board needs help rather than carrying one fixed job.

Why does an HOA member matter?

Every right and obligation in an HOA, voting, dues, rule compliance, traces back to this basic membership status, not to any title a person might later hold on the board. That distinction is worth knowing because a role like Member at Large comes with its own duties and voting restrictions, separate from what ordinary membership grants on its own.
