Tenant

What is an HOA tenant?

A tenant is someone who rents a home or unit from the owner rather than owning it themselves. Tenants generally don’t have the same privileges as homeowners, they typically can’t vote in HOA meetings or view all association documents the way an owner can.

Why does an HOA tenant matter?

Even without full membership privileges, tenants are the ones actually living by the community’s day-to-day rules, which makes clear communication with renters just as important as communication with owners, even if the formal relationship runs through the owner.

When You’ll Run Into This

This distinction matters most when a rule violation or complaint involves a rental unit, since the board typically has to work through the owner rather than dealing with the tenant directly.
