Kangaroo Court

What is a kangaroo court?

A kangaroo court describes a situation where an HOA enforces rules without due process or proper legal authority, essentially making a decision that skips the fair, documented procedure residents are actually entitled to.

Why does a kangaroo court matter?

Getting labeled a kangaroo court, even informally by frustrated residents, is a real reputational and legal risk. It’s usually a sign that a board skipped documented process in favor of moving fast, and it can turn even a legitimate decision into a liability.

When You’ll Run Into This

This term gets used the moment a resident feels a hearing or fine was decided before they ever got a real chance to respond. Our guide to a fair approach to HOA rules enforcement covers how to make sure that never becomes a fair description of your board.
